Recently, I turned on my laptop, then logged in. After typing my password, the screen was black, and all I could do was move my mouse around. I did the little trick of CTRL+SHIFT+ESC, then I ended explorer.exe and started it again. Everything seemed to be fine, except I couldn't open any antivirus programs. The Windows Installer also doesn't work.

I'm using a Sony VAIO, and it runs Vista Home Premium.

Now it is nearly a month later, and I have tried everything.
-System Restore (it was a bad idea, actually)
-Going into REGEDIT and looking at my explorer.exe snaps.
-Booting from a Recovery Disk.
-I even downloaded the full version of RegCure, because it claimed to be the number one fixer of black screens. LIES.

So, if anybody can help, I would really appreciate it.

Hi Charily,

I presume, seeing as you've not done a fresh re-install of Vista, that it is an OEM install?

Given this presumption, you've done all the right moves ( apart for the system restore, as you say - if you get the right restore point, then you can usually save things, but in this case....).

It would be useful if you could post some screen-shots using photobucket, or some-such image hosting service.

BUT, from what you describe, you caught a virus. Any chance you can post your recent Event logs ( Computer - right click - Manage - Event viewer - Windows logs- Security )?

The black screeen, inability to run AV software, explorer.exe hanging, etc. are all typical symptoms of a viral infection. If your Vaio is networked to another computer, then try running an AV from that box on your Vaio. If not, I guess you must have friends/relations that are computer owners. Try networking your lappy to another machine with a decent AV prog. and see where that gets you.

Without more precise info, I can't really help any further. In your position, if the above doesn't work, a fresh OS install might be necessary.

The more info you post, the more feedback you'll get.

Hope to hear from you soon

Chris

Very Happy
